CURIOSIDADES - The most probably Portuguese contribution for the dissemination of dogs holding a ridge

The most probably Portuguese contribution for the dissemination of dogs holding a ridge

Most probably the Portuguese made a very big contribution for the dissemination of dogs carrying a ridge.

Actually we can found dogs with ridge at five places on Earth, in Phu Quoc Island (Siam golf, belonging actually to the Vietnam), in Cambodja, in Thailand named “Mha Kon Klab”, in Timor Lorosae named “Riscas” and in  the south of Angola (Tigers Bay) named “Cão da Baia dos Tigres”.

On the first three cases, we can encounter divergent opinions regarding the provenience and the introduction of the ridged dogs on that places, same say that was the Arab traders, other argue that was the Dutch vessels, but also a third opinion defend that was the Portuguese who made that dissemination on their caravels.

Really, historic facts can defend that idea, first as the last port before the caravels cross the Indic Ocean was Moçamedes ( Actual Namibe), land of Macubaios, Guenguelas e Kamussakels, all belonging to the big family of the Khoi Khoi and owners of ridged dogs, second  because many years before the Dutch the Portuguese already made business (mostly fire arms) with the Kingdom of Siam and others at the Siam´s Golf, inclusively they establish a colony at Malaca, and hold a special status at Ayuntya, the old capital of Siam’s Kingdom, where they build their own Portuguese village.

Consequently, and as the Portuguese used dogs for killing the rats in the framework of their caravels, as also the existence of narratives saying that most of the Portuguese podengos died during the voyages due to sickness, and as Moçamedes was the last port for provisions before crossing the Indic Ocean, was also most probably that they embark same dogs of the local tribes, holding a ridge, as they are small and very decided, in order to defend the provisions from the rats.

Another import notice was related by a colonel of British army, he found a very big evidence that the Portuguese caravels used the Phu Quoc Island for rest, provisions and watering during decades, he found there a very big number of old fire arms and small canons with Portuguese Coat of Arms. Most probably they used that Island to giving rest to the crew, as well as, to make incursions to the mainland at both sides (Siam and Cambodja Kingdoms) to develop their commercial activities.

Regarding the “Riscas” and the “Cão da Baia dos Tigres” for sure that have been the Portuguese that  introduce and develop that dogs, the “Riscas” exist in the mountains of Timor Lorosae and mostly of them are savage but not aggressive to the man, same Australians, apart of Portuguese and Indonesians already see and have contact with that dogs.

The “Cão da Baia dos Tigres” exist exclusively at Baia dos Tigres, a old peninsula that become a Island, they are completely wild and savages, and they are the consequence of a deportation on 19th century of all dogs from Moçamedes due to a outbreak of rage.

Today the dogs exist in different packs, mainly the fish, seals and albatrosses are their food, they are exceptional swimmers and holders of tremendous ferocity and incredible sense of self defence , they adapt themselves to the most adverse conditions of Angola and probably of the World, as a curiosity, and as no potable water on the Island they drink from the sea, not salt water but the small particles of potable water that stay on top during the breaking of the waves.
